Some have complained about the appearance of the monster as goofy and badly done. I don't get this. I think it's pretty cool looking -- a multitude of tentacles, malevolent head, gaping maw. What do you expect for low-budget CGI? I think it's better than any creature in the ridiculously expensive cartoon "Avatar" (no offense to "Avatar" fans, my wife loved it, it's just not my cup of tea).

The Story Off:  Behemoth An earthquake seriously damages the town, and the diner William is in, trying to get owner-waitress Zoe to leave, sinks into the ground. The box is recovered but the monster has found the couple first. The boyfriend ends up in the monster's maw but Thomas turns up in time and pulls Grace to safety. 73 minutes into the film, the monster decides it is time to reveal itself, ripping off the top of a mountain to do so. Thomas opens the box and fires a shoulder launched multi-warhead missile at the monster, with the one which goes down it's throat killing it. Well, aspects of this story are especially grisly -- watching victims get fried (flashed to negative on the film and the burned down where they stand), or wandering through the streets stricken, their skin melted from lethal radiation doses, was pretty chilling for a science fiction film in 1959. But originally, Behemoth, The Sea Monster was to have been a more challenging and subtle horror/sci-fi effort, more time along the lines of Hammer Films' Quatermass movies and that same studio's X The Unknown. THE PLOT: In the Great Northwest the Walsh family's patriarch seems to be going crazy with his blathering on on mythical prophecies about some colossal beast awakening and creating havoc. Meanwhile there are ominous geological signs that something earth-shattering may be occurring. The local authorities finally take heed and give the word to evacuate. The problem is the beautiful Walsh daughter is camping with her fiancé on the mountain, which is the focal point of the catastrophe. Her older brother and a scientist girlfriend go to the mountain to save her. There's also a government agent investigating things. All hell breaks loose literally.

The likable cast is a plus, particularly the Walsh , but the ages are  Ed Quinn as the main protagonist, Tom, is old enough to be Cindy Busby's father. Cindy plays Grace and is said to be 20 whereas Quinn . The Walsh father is played by William Davis who's past 60. He should've played the grandfather and Quinn the father. Oh well, no big deal.

The production history of Watch Behemoth (2011) Movie For Free Full, The Sea Monster (better known in America as The Giant Behemoth) is, in some ways, more interesting than the movie itself -- though the film does have many enjoyable elements. Watching the final cut of the movie, it's easy to admire the work of animator Willis O'Brien and his associate Pete Peterson, and what they achieved in terms of dinosaur effects on a perilously low budget (a fact of which we are reminded by the ferry-boat sinking sequence, done by different animators, who clearly lacked O'Brien's and Peterson's skills). And the acting and directing are first-rate for a property such as this, with excellent central performances by Gene Evans and Andre Morell.

Behemoth" combines the plot of "Dante's Peak" with countless monster-in-the-woods flicks, so this may not be the most original film out there but it's well done for what it is. Where it scores high marks for originality is the cause of the disaster, the behemoth itself. Most monster-in-the-woods flicks feature creatures about the size of Bigfoot, e.g. the many "Sasquatch" flicks, "Goblin", "Man-Thing", "It Waits", "Carny", "Prophecy" ('79), "Gargoyles", etc. Not so here. The creature in "Behemoth" is indeed a behemoth, so huge that it literally sleeps/lives inside a mountain.

"Behemoth" was shot in Squamish, BC. Although this is a dreary area (cloudy with lots of rain) it's exceptionally scenic!
